What would it take for you to create a brilliant 2016?
Start with asking yourself a couple of searching questions: 1/ who do you want to become (internal) 2/ what do you want to achieve (external). Apply the following process to both of these, focusing on the internal first. Who you are becoming will impact and determine what you want to achieve.
A/ know the outcomes and results you want for 2016
When you are clear on your outcomes, your mind shifts focus and becomes like a laser focus for the mind. Focus on what you want, not on what you don’t want. You will get more of what you focus on, to the exclusion of everything else.
Write down the outcomes you want in life for 2016. Make them very specific and clearly articulated. Buy a “goals” journal and read over them every day.
The unconscious mind struggles to focus on negatives like “I don’t want to be lazy” … It only recognizes it in the positive, “I want to be lazy”, so it’s important to state what you want in the positive. I want to be active, intentional and growing etc.
B/ take BIG action – action creates momentum. You can be on the right track, but if you just sit there and do nothing, you’ll still get run over by a train. Commit. Change your language around things being too hard, to things being unfamiliar. Like riding a bike, which is actually quite easy when you know how, but the first time it seems very hard. This is because it’s unfamiliar and not hard. Instead of seeing failure as fatal, view it as effective feedback for learning, growth and success. Take ownership and responsibility for your choices, actions and behaviour.
C/ Self-evaluation – notice what’s going on. Am I getting the outcomes I desire? Don’t get stuck in what you’re doing if you are not getting the results you want. Become keenly aware and then adjust, tweak, change or create new actions and behaviours to support your desired outcomes.
D/ Behavioural flexibility – people are not their behaviour and the person with the most behavioural flexibility gets the best results. How do I need to change? What behaviour needs to be shifted, stopped, adjusted or adopted?
E/ Start – maintain – finish
Know your strength, celebrate it and work on the others. Some people are great starters – visionaries, ideas people and innovators. Some people love to maintain and manage – doers, task focused and achievers. Some are great finishers – complete the task, must finish before we start the next things
We must all develop as finishers in life to become more effective. Completes the cycle. Some people are scared to finish because it means starting something else … Fearful. Some people find maintaining mode really boring, so we need to give new meaning to the task of maintaining, to see it as a springboard to success and achievement, and to the next adventure.
What area do I need to work on? How can I grow to complete the cycle?
Thanks for a great 2015 and I look forward to sharing with you in 2016. Brett
